Against the backdrop of an ongoing and devastating war, Palestinian and Israeli mothers came together in a rare and powerful act of unity, walking barefoot through the streets of Rome on Tuesday, as part of a global mobilisation known as The Mothers’ Call for Peace.

The initiative is led by grassroots activists Reem al Hajajreh and Dr Yael Admi, alongside Palestine’s Women of the Sun and Israel’s Women Wage Peace. The Rome march marked a significant global moment for The Mothers’ Call, a growing campaign urging an end to violence and the protection of all children.

Side by side, the women walked barefoot, a deliberate and deeply symbolic act. Organisers describe the gesture as reflecting both vulnerability and resilience, grounding participants in the shared pain of a land marked by loss, while calling for healing and accountability. Each step honoured children killed in conflict, while reinforcing a unified demand: that no child should ever be killed or raised in a reality shaped by violence.

The march in Rome formed part of a wider coordinated action, with solidarity walks and virtual participation planned in the United States, Brazil, Argentina, Israel, and Germany as the movement gathered global momentum. While organisers had initially hoped to hold a parallel march in Jerusalem, conditions on the ground made this impossible.

At the heart of The Mothers Call is a clear message: peace is urgent, and it must be inclusive. The campaign calls for the meaningful participation of women in political processes, arguing that sustainable peace cannot be achieved without those most directly affected by the human cost of war.

Media coverage of the event highlighted the powerful imagery of Palestinian and Israeli mothers walking side by side, underscoring a shared grief that transcends international and political divides. The demonstration also drew attention to the disproportionate impact of conflict on civilians, particularly women and children, and the growing calls for a lasting solution.

The involvement of global advocacy networks, including organisations such as Vital Voices, has helped amplify the campaign beyond the region. From Europe to Asia and beyond, parallel actions echoed a common demand: an end to bloodshed and a future grounded in dignity, safety, and coexistence.

In a time defined by deep division, the image of mothers walking together, unarmed, unguarded, and barefoot, offered a rare interruption to the cycle of hostility.

Their message reached beyond politics, rooted instead in shared humanity that every child’s life holds equal value.

From Rome, that message now carries across borders, driven not by governments, but by mothers refusing to accept that violence is inevitable.
